Everyone wishes to have the authority, but very few take the responsibility. Its seems to be a great idea to go around bossing, but when it comes to be taking the failures of the teams on the shoulders why does people who claimed to be the bosses, take the back seat??
The question remains unanswered!!
Its very easy to become a boss, but equally or more difficult to be a leader, a coach, a mentor!
It takes pain to bow down in front of the subordinates to say "i am sorry" or "that was my mistake", only a true leader has the courage to stand in front of his team and acknowledge his mistakes. And that's the way only to earn more respect in the eyes of the people who take the ownership of the outcomes of your decisions.
One can always, effortlessly, ask his subordinates to execute his idea, but it is, at the same time, difficult for an individual to make his team take the ownership of the results that might or are going to come after the execution of that idea. Only a true leader can do that!
A leader has a subtle way of challenging his team to perform, but if there is a failure he would still appreciate whatever the team has achieved.
A leader will never forget that he is also the part of the team, and for the success of the team he has to play his role with the same kind of sincerity and dedication as he expects his team to play their part.
Trust is a two way street, and as a leader it becomes important for him to gain his team's trust by making a clear communication of his expectations from the team. At the same time providing them with the support they would need to come at par with the leaders expectations. But in today's scenario, people have forgotten there roles and responsibilities as a leader, and all they are trying to do is to just show the team "WHO IS THE BOSS". Being a boss does not give right to an individual to insult any persons intelligence over an issue.
"A BOSS CAN BE SYMPATHETIC, BUT A LEADER IS ALWAYS EMPATHETIC". One has to understand that there many issues on the personal front(spouse, children, finances, etc) of a team member which the individual can not overlook. And hence, considering that he is not giving it as an excuse for non-performance, there should be a scope for rescheduling and that understanding of a leader will always be appreciated.
If either of the party, leader or the team, has an issue with either's performance, be open and TALK!!
(please do leave comments, good or bad, this was an attempt to share what I feel as a team member and a leader)
